33 CAVENDISH SQUARE

The refurbishment of an iconic tower in Oxford Circus London.

The new entrance space is designed around the original radial grid. The intention from the start was to create a memorable experience for visitors entering and leaving the building. A 4.5m tall chandelier is hung at the centre of the ornate ceiling creating an immersive light installation. Made up of nearly 100 light fittings the chandelier is demountable to allow for reuse of its components at the end of its life.

In order to visually order and increase the impact the walls and ceiling were darkened. This is a trick borrowed from theatre design which enabled us to quieten the complexity of the existing ceiling and allow it to be retained. The colour was carefully chosen to complement the existing stonework at low level to ensure it could also be retained.
