RAGLAN GATEHOUSE, PLYMOUTH

Conversion and refurbishment of a Grade II listed former army barracks gatehouse into new accommodation together with the construction of a new residential mews street adjacent.

Working alongside Plymouth Council and Historic England, we are developing a solution for inserting new residential units within the former stone gatehouse.

No new openings can be made in the facade and therefore external courtyards are carefully positioned to allow natural light into the heart of the building. The original stone steps, cantilevered off the walls, are used to serve the three levels including a recessed top level which sits above the parapet line.

The original parade grounds, now lost, are partially reinstated in the proposed layout as a communal garden together with the original processional line of trees. A linking passage connects the new line of mews houses.
