Stripping Back: From Garage to Workspace

Exposing the Original Structure to Inform the Design

written by Paloma

One of the most important moments in a construction project is when you strip the building back to its original structure. At 7-9 Rathbone Street — a former 1920s garage – we’re doing just that. We’re exposing the concrete soffit to reveal the original character of the building, while also reducing the need for unnecessary finishes.

This approach lets us see the space in its raw state and start testing ideas at full scale. We’ve set up a detailed mock-up to help finalise key elements, including the position and proportions of the acoustic panels and ducts. Both are made from recycled materials, so it’s important they perform well while supporting our sustainability goals.

Mock-ups like this allow us to make confident, informed decisions — and ensure that every detail supports the design vision, from structure to surface.
